Oh now, this is going to get a bit deep as we ask…do you truly believe in yourself, or do you harbour self-limiting beliefs? Mmm, think about it and be honest with yourself as by the way, there’s no one else with you right now that you’re going to fool! OK, let’s ask a little more.
Do you believe that the universe and everything that is in it is yours for the taking, or does that little voice in your head say things like:
“I can’t do that; I’m too young to do that; that’s not for people like me; I’m not clever enough; …” and so on. Well, any of the aforementioned are self-limiting beliefs, and by definition, they are limiting you and your potential.
The thing about beliefs is, that they are ours, we own them, and as such hold them very dear, and that they are all true, otherwise why would we believe them? The downside is, that not all of them are true and not all of them are helpful.
At the Centre for NLP, we do see and work with a lot of people. A really good cross section of our population. As such we also see a lot of people who have a self-limiting belief or two – sometimes more! People like Penny, who came to us for training during which we walkabout about beliefs and the possibility that we have self-limiting beliefs. After the class discussion, we went on to the conceptive changing a belief. Now I don’t know about you but when I first thought about this, many years ago, I remember thinking … really… change a belief, something that is so close and dear to me. But that’s exactly what happened a what we did.
You see, Penny had been holding on to the belief that she was not good enough for 40 years. This one belief was leading to anxiety and raising her stress levels and she wanted it to stop. After a brief conversation and work with Penn’s Sub-Modalities that old belief was no longer true and she instead believes, that she was good enough. Days later she wrote to say that the exercise had left her feeling liberated. Wow… that’s powerful.
Come and join us at one of our training to find out how you can do this for yourself and others. If you can’t make one soon the exercise below might help.
Self-limiting beliefs – Exercise
Now, if you are not already in a quiet place, take yourself to one, make sure that you will not be disturbed and run over this exercise. First of all, read the instructions all the way through and make sure you understand them.
Then close your eyes, take a deep breath through your mouth and let it out slowly through your nose. Then do it again … in through your nose, and out through your mouth, allowing you body to relax totally.
Imagine any tension just flowing right the way down through your body and out through your toes. Use any sounds that you can hear for your own benefit. Allow them to drift and your mind to wander and, inside your mind, go deeper and deeper still.
As you go deeper still allow your attention to fall upon something you wish to accomplish but still wait to achieve. Never mind what has happened in the past. Let just fall away. Imagine a large picture of your future success. See yourself achieving your aim. hear what you would hear and feel what you would feel. Double the picture and make it brighter and then double it again. Make it life size, and when it is life size and as real as you can possibly make it, mentally step into the picture so now you are seeing everything through your own eyes.
Soak up the experience and know not only that you can do this, but you have achieved it. Bask in the feeling of success. At the point, you reach the highest intensity squeeze your right hand very tightly. When you are ready you can begin to open your eyes fully. Do something else for a moment or two and then squeeze your right hand again to revisit the feelings.
Do let us know ho you get on.
